Literacy Framework
SUSD’s Foundations of Elementary Reading Instruction In-service explicitly supports the SUSD Literacy Framework and articulates evidence based reading instructional practices and strategies.
All elementary teachers are required to take Reading Foundations in their second year in the district.
The in-service includes two rounds of follow-up reading coach support and is offered in the summer and fall. Content includes:
- Implementation of the SUSD’s Literacy Framework
- The essential components of the Big 5:
- Phonological Awareness
- Phonics
- Fluency
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
Strategies will be practiced for explicit whole group instruction and targeted small group instruction, including literacy stations.
